About Wisonsin

Wisconsin entered the Union on May 29, 1848, as the 30th state. It is one of the leading states in agriculture. Because of the huge amount of cheese that is produced in the state, Wisconsin is sometimes called the Cheese Capital of the Nation or America’s Dairyland. Most of the state is made up of wide plains that are used to raise crops and fuel the dairy industry. Milwaukee and other cities next to the shore of Lake Michigan are known for their heavy industry.

Wisconsin is in the north central United States, and sits on Lake Superior on the north, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on the northeast, and Lake Michigan on the east, with Illinois on the south, and Iowa and Minnesota on the west. Wisconsin is named after the Wisconsin River, a body of water named by the French after an Ojibwa term that is thought to mean “gathering of the waters” or “place of the beaver.” The miners who first came to the state to settle it lived in mine shafts or dug their homes in the sides of hills and live underground, much like badgers do. As a result, Wisconsin is sometimes known as the Badger State.

Madison is the capital of Wisconsin. The city was founded in 1836 when a former federal judge named James Doty purchased a large tract of land between Lakes Mendota and Monona. Due to the judges influence, Madison was chosen as the capital of Wisconsin while it was still only a city in theory.

Today, Madison is a growing city. It is the second largest city in Wisconsin, and in 1996 Money Magazine called it the best place to live. The city has also been identified as the healthiest place to live by magazines, due in large part to the extensive bike path and trail system set up in and around the city.

Milwaukee is the largest city in Wisconsin. It was settled in 1818 by Frenchman Solomon Juneau. German immigrants flooded into the city, and into the 20th century, more people spoke German than English there. The word Milwaukee comes from the Native American word Millioke, which means “The Good Land”, “Gathering place by the water” or “beautiful or pleasant lands”.

Milwaukee is known today as “The City of Festivals” for its great number of ethnic and musical festivals, the largest of which is Summerfest. It has also been called “Brew City,” because at one time Milwaukee was home to four of the major U.S. breweries in the U.S., and was the number one beer producing city in the world.

In Wisconsin at the beginning of the 20th century, Progressive politicians developed theories of good government working with leading intellectuals at the University of Wisconsin. Roughly half a century later, Wisconsin Senator Joseph R. McCarthy went on a crusade to root out and destroy Communism in the U.S.
