About Virginia
Virginia is a state in the eastern United States and one of the original 13 colonies. Named for the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I of England, Virginia was England’s first successful colony on the continent and the home of the first enduring English settlement in America. For a while, the colony was also made up of territory that later formed other states. West Virginia was carved out of Virginia in 1863. Virginia’s rich political heritage helped shape the democratic principles on which the United States was founded. Virginia played an important role in the American Revolution, and it entered the Union as the tenth of the original 13 states on June 25, 1788. During the American Civil War the state’s capital, Richmond, was also capital of the Confederacy. The state has long been nicknamed Old Dominion.
George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe, all Virginians, were founding fathers of the United States and were among the first five U.S. presidents. Virginia was also the birthplace of U.S. presidents William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, and Woodrow Wilson. This earned Virginia the name Mother of Presidents.
Richmond, Virginia’s capital, was the site of numerous American Revolution events. Patrick Henry gave his famous “Give me liberty or give me death,” speech in the city. Richmond served as the fledgling nation’s capital for years after the War, and in its capital building, Thomas Jefferson wrote the statute that ensured a separation of church and state for the country.
Today, Richmond’s economy is based mostly on finance and law. The city is also a popular tourist destination, for it’s historical houses.
Roanoke, one of Virginia’s larger cities, was once known as Big Lick, thanks to a natural outcropping of salt along the Roanoke River that drew wildlife from miles around. The town was renamed after the Roanoke river, and soon became an important stop on trails and railroads, sitting as it d along major trade routes between Maryland and Tennessee.
Blacksburg, Virginia, is home to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and University, known simply as Virginia Tech. When the University was annexed into the town in the 1970s, the population of Blacksburg more than tripled, and even today, the majority of the town’s residents are students and alumni of the school.
Abingdon is one of Virginia’s most historic towns. Many of the city’s original structures still stand, and it is home to the Barter Theater, and nationally known stage. The Martha Washington Inn, which is housed in the old Martha Washington College, is a popular hotel for visitors to the area.
Close to Abingdon is Bristol, a city that Virginia shares with Tennessee. Though the Bristol Motor Speedway is technically in the Tennessee half of Bristol, there is another Virginia city famous for NASCAR. Martinsville is the home of the Martinsville Speedway, the shortest track in NASCAR, and one of the first ones to be paved.
