About Texas
Texas was an independent republic until it joined the Union on December 29, 1845, as the 28th state. Its single-star flag dates from its independent period and has given Texas the nickname the Lone Star State. It borders Mexico on the southwest and the Gulf of Mexico on the southeast. To the west is New Mexico, to the north and northeast lie Oklahoma and Arkansas, and Louisiana bounds Texas on the east.
Texas is the size of Ohio, Indiana, and all the New England and Middle Atlantic states combined, and its vast area encompasses forests, mountains, deserts and dry plains, and a long, humid, subtropical coastal lowland. Texas’s wealth of mineral resources is almost unequaled among the other states. Texas has become an American legend, thanks to rapid development based on this wealth of resources and the hugeness of the state. Oil wells, chemicals, ranches, and cattle have played a major part in the making of this legend.
For more than 100 years, Texas was part of the Spanish Empire in America. When Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821, Texas was for a while joined to Mexico. The section from San Antonio southward retains the flavor of the Hispano-Mexican period in its architecture, foods, and festivals.
The name Texas is derived from tejas or teyas, Spanish for friends or allies. After a while it came to mean the region north of the Río Grande and east of New Mexico, and was officially applied as Texas when the area was organized as a republic in 1836.
Austin is the capital of Texas. The first permanent settlement of the area around Austin was when a village called Waterloo was founded in 1837. Railroads and commerce moved in, and Austin grew with the times.
Today, Austin residents are proud of being eccentric and rejoice in the distinctions between Austin and other U.S. cities. “Keep Austin Weird” has become a local motto recently, and is seen on countless bumper stickers and t-shirts. This motto been used to encourage Austin’s eccentricity and diversity, but has also served to promote local and independent businesses.
Houston is the largest city in Texas. Founded in 1836 by two brothers, the city grew with the railroads, and when oil was discovered there in 1901, the U.S. petroleum industry was born. Today, Houston is one of the most multicultural cities in the U.S., due to its academic institutions and its industry. NASA also has a strong influence on the city, as its official visitors center is housed in Houston. The Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center draws visitors from all over the country.
Dallas is the third largest city in Texas and, like Houston, grew its economy with oil. Perhaps not the most significant, but certainly the most delicious contribution by Dallas to the culture of America is the frozen Margarita.
