About New York

New York entered the Union on July 26, 1788, as the 11th of the original 13 states. In the 1660s, the state was named for the duke of York, later James II of England, though many place names are from the time when the region was a Dutch colony.

New York is rich in a history that goes all the way back to when Native Americans first lived on its shores and in its river valleys. The Erie Canal, now a part of the New York State Canal System, was essential to deciding the pattern of commerce early in U.S. history. The Statue of Liberty, in New York Harbor, was the first vision of America seen by millions of immigrants arriving at New York City.

New York has long been a leader in the political, cultural, and economic life of the United States. It has been called the Empire State since before 1800, a reference to its wealth and variety of resources and probably derived from a comment by George Washington that foresaw New York as the seat of the new empire. Although California surpassed it in population in 1963 and in manufacturing in 1972, choices made in New York influence much of the country’s commerce, finance, and the creative arts. Strangely enough, New York City is the largest city in the country, and yet much of New York is still rural.

New York City is the home of the United Nations, and the center of global finance, communications, and business. New York City is unusual among cities because of its high residential density, its extraordinarily diverse population, its hundreds of tall office and apartment buildings, its thriving central business district, its extensive public transportation system, and its more than 400 distinct neighborhoods. The city’s concert houses, museums, galleries, and theaters constitute an ensemble of cultural richness rivaled by few cities. In addition, New York City has given birth to many American cultural movements, including the Harlem Renaissance, abstract expressionism, and hip hop.

The city is made up of five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. There are over 8 million people living in these five neighborhoods.

Albany is the capital of New York, and the second oldest capital in the U.S. Today, the city fights its reputation as the ‘most average city in America’ by nurturing a growing arts scene.

Buffalo is New York’s second largest city, and also the cleanest. Hydroelectric power harnessed from nearby Niagara Falls allowed Buffalo to be the first American city with extensive electric lighting, earning it the nickname, the “City of Light“. The city is known as the friendliest city in the country. In an effort to distance itself from an industrial past that proved to be fiscally disastrous, Buffalo is redefining itself as a cultural, banking, educational, and medical center.
