About Missouri

When it was admitted to the Union as the 24th state on August 10, 1821, Missouri was the western frontier of the United States. Later, people began to call it the Gateway to the West, due to the plentiful and straightforward overland routes that led from Missouri to California and Oregon. When, in 1899, Congressman Willard D. Vandiver said: “I come from a country that raises corn and cotton and cockleburs and Democrats, and frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. I’m from Missouri. You’ve got to show me,” another nickname got added to the list. After that, Missouri became known as the Show Me State.

Missouri, state in the central United States. Missouri is met in the north by Iowa, surrounded in the west by Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma, bordered on the south by Arkansas, and on the east by the Mississippi River, which separates it from Tennessee, Kentucky, and Illinois. The name of the state is taken from the Missouri River and is an Algonquian name for a group that lived near the mouth of the river.

Found in the heart of the nation, Missouri is one of the most productive agricultural states in the country and one of the most important manufacturing states in the Midwest. Midwestern in its grain and cornfields, Southern in its cotton fields, Western in its cattle raising, and Eastern in its manufacturing, Missouri today is more and more frequently known as the Center State, and as a major transportation crossroads. Missouri also possesses a rapidly growing wine industry.

The state’s most famous city, St. Louis, lies near the convergence of two great inland water routes, the Missouri and the Mississippi Rivers. St. Louis, sometimes known as Saint Louis, was named after Louis the IX of France. The city was known for being a Gateway to the West, since the Oregon Trail began near the city, and many people started out on their journey westward through and near St. Louis. These days, the city is a pioneer in the healthcare industry and in scientific research, thanks in part to Washington University, which is a top research school in the nation and known all over the world for its medical, social work and law schools.

Jefferson City is Missouri’s capital, and named after the third President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, who purchased Missouri from the French with the Louisiana Purchase. Jefferson City sits by the Missouri River, in the Ozark mountains. Louis and Clark passed through the site on their famed expedition.

Kansas City is the largest city, with nearly half a million residents. The city had a hand in the Civil War, and a few battles occurred there. Missouri was a slave state that never seceded from the Union, and most of the battles fought there were in the Unions favor.
