About Massachusetts
Massachusetts entered the Union on February 6, 1788, as the sixth of the original 13 states. When still a colony, it had become an important intellectual center, known for Harvard College and the cultural institutions of Boston.
Massachusetts is called the Bay State after Massachusetts Bay, the site of the Puritans’ colony. Those early settlers from Europe provide the state with other nicknames, including the Pilgrim State and the Puritan State. The first Europeans to settle in New England landed in Massachusetts, at Plymouth Rock. Many of the Puritan ideals and influences are evident still in the states laws today.
Many events in Massachusetts, including the Stamp Act riots in 1765, the Boston Massacre in 1770, and the Boston Tea Party in 1773, were precursors to the American Revolution. The first battles of the revolution were fought in Massachusetts, and the state is covered in many well-preserved landmarks, historic places like Plymouth, Boston, Lexington, and Concord.
Once the nation’s fishing and commercial capital,
Massachusetts later pioneered in the fields of education, medicine, and social welfare. By the 19th century the state developed into an important manufacturing center, producing textiles and other goods. In the 20th century, Massachusetts saw a decline in the economy as the manufacturing industry looked to the South for cheaper labor. But in the mid-20th century, electronic components and other high-technology items became leading manufactures.
Massachusetts is famous for its summer resorts, such as the sand beaches of Cape Cod and the islands of Nantucket and
Martha’s Vineyard. Possessing long irregular beaches and shore, and the rolling Berkshire Hills, Massachusetts draws many visitors looking for history and beauty, and many people searching for a new home. Massachusetts, officially known as the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, is one of the states of New England. It is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and southeast, Rhode Island and Connecticut on the south, and New York on the west. North of Massachusetts lie Vermont and New Hampshire.
Boston is the capital and largest city of
Massachusetts. The area is a tightly connected group of smaller cities whose transportation networks are deeply entrenched. After the American Revolution, Boston quickly became one of the wealthiest cities in America, mostly because it is the closest port to Europe. The wealthy and elite citizens of Boston became known as the Boston Brahmins, and many in American looked to them for social and cultural trends.
Today, the city is ethnically diverse, do to an influx of European and other world immigrants.
Boston is home to over 100 colleges and University, attended by over a quarter of a million students, and is known as one of the intellectual capitals of the country. Boston also struggles with gentrification issues and rising housing costs.
