About Illinois

Illinois was the 21st state admitted into the Union, entering in December of 1818. Sometimes called the Heart of the Midwest, Illinois was, a mere 200 years ago, a vast wilderness. One side of the state cradles the Mississippi River, the other touches Lake Michigan. The majority of the state is a vast area of mostly flat plains, once covered with prairie grasses. In order to make room for crops and grazing, the grasslands were cleared, but the state is still called the Prairie State.

Large farms are laid out across the state, in a checkerboard pattern of fields that is often found in Midwestern states. These farms grow grains and raise livestock on the fertile prairie soil. The most common landmarks tend to be grain silos, church bell towers, and the rare grove of trees. In case this sounds rather barren, know that rural Illinois is not isolated from urban parts of Illinois. A thick network of railways, interstates, waterways and air routes cover the state, and center on Chicago’s large metropolis.

Chicago is the third largest city in the United States, and is in charge of the state’s industrial, financial and social existence. The metropolitan area of Chicago is home to nearly 10 million people. Chicago’s centralized location has been a key factor in its physical and economic growth. Though the city is in the center of the country, its position on the coast of a Great Lake allowed for water transport, as well a railroad shipping.

In 1871, the Great Chicago Fire burned for three days, destroying 4 square miles of the city and killing hundreds of residents. The city burned as easily as it did because of a recent drought, the city’s abundant use of wood in building and the strength of the northwesterly winds. Chicago began immediately rebuilding, this time with more metal, stone and brick materials, and in 1885, built the world’s first skyscraper.

The capital of Illinois is Springfield, a city that President Abraham Lincoln often called home. Though he was not born there, he came to live in Springfield, and studied there. The national fame of Springfield is reflected in the official state slogan, Land of Lincoln. A less heartwarming trivia tidbit about Springfield is that the city was the starting point for the Donner Party, an infamous group of westward traveling American settlers who resorted to cannibalism when they became snowbound in the Sierra Nevada.

The state is named for the Illinois, or Illini, a confederation of Native Americans of various tribes who inhabited Illinois and other sections of the Midwest at the time the first French explorers entered the region. The name Illinois is said to have been a French version of an Illini word.
