About Connecticut

Connecticut was originally a Dutch colony, founded in 1614. English Puritans began settling the state in the mid-1600s, and eventually the British outnumbered the Dutch. When American colonies revolted against the British monarchy overseas, Connecticut was one of the resulting thirteen states.

The name of the state is derived from a Mahican word for long, tidal river. The Mahicans were transplants from the Hudson River Valley, who passed through the territory that would become Connecticut and it’s surrounding neighbors, before moving on to Wisconsin.

The capital of Connecticut is Hartford. The city is the home of the headquarters of many insurance companies from all over the world, and thus earned the nickname “the insurance capital of the world.” Many literary notables come from Hartford, including Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, author Charles Dudley Warner, Poet Wallace Stevens, and of course, Mark Twain.

Twain wrote numerous novels set in and around Hartford, and was a highly influential political commentator and satirist. Today, visitors to Hartford can see his home, newly restored and open to the public.

Hartford, the state capital, is perched on the Connecticut River, which divides the state in half. The city has some wonderful historic buildings, such as the Old State House; the Center Church, with stained glass windows by Louis Tiffany; and the Wadsworth Athenaeum, a castle-like structure that, among other things, has a newly restored sculpture garden and a vast collection of many fine paintings of the Hudson River School of art. The Connecticut River Valley is also the historic location of tobacco fields with their characteristic open-air barns.

New Haven is Connecticut’s second largest city and home to Ivy League School Yale University. The university is one of Connecticut’s largest employers, and research performed at the university has spawned the growth of multi-billion dollar biotechnology companies and ventures. Yale also houses an art gallery, with works by van Gogh, Manet, and Picasso, while the Yale Center for British Art offers the largest collection of this kind in the United States. Close by, the Barker Character, Comic & Cartoon Museum in Cheshire displays 60,000 pieces of cartoon art.

New Haven is also known for several firsts in the nation and around the world. Some call it the first planned community because of the meticulously laid out streets that first made up the city. New Haven also claims to be the birthplace of the Frisbee (a pie tin tossed by relaxing Yale students), American football, American pizza (two local establishments claim this) and the modern hamburger.

Bridgeport is Connecticut’s most populated city, and is nicknamed the Park City. Strangely enough Bridgeport’s most well-known resident is P.T. Barnum, circus millionaire and one-time mayor. Barnum was instrumental in cleaning up the water supply, installing gaslights on the streets, and enforcing prostitution and liquor laws.
