About Colorado

Colorado joined the Union in 1876, one hundred years after the Declaration of Independence. The name of the state was chosen by Congress, and is based on a Spanish phrase meaning ‘colored red.’ The Colorado River, which runs through the state, is the namesake of the state, and is, as the name implies, a red river.

In 1893, Colorado granted it’s female citizens the right to vote, though it would be another 27 years before women all over the nation would be allowed to.

Colorado’s capital is Denver, which is also its largest city, with 2.5 million people living there. This is more than half of Colorado’s population statewide. Denver is settled in the South Platte River Valley, and those in south Denver have a clear view of the Rocky Mountains in the distance. Denver is known as the Mile-High City, because its elevation is exactly one mile above sea level.

Denver attained Olympic infamy by turning down an opportunity to host the games. Voters in the state refused to pay for the expense, and many Colorado residents had misgivings about the environmental impact of hosting the games. Richard Lamm, who eventually became Governor of the state, led the movement against hosting the Olympics.

Colorado has some of the most beautiful scenery and world-renowned skiing. As a result, the state is a number-one tourist destination. Rocky Mountain National Park draws many visitors, as does the Great Sand Dunes and Dinosaur National Monuments, the Curecanti National Rec Area, the Colorado National Monument, the Black Canyon, and Mesa Verde National Park.

Mesa Verde National Park is a fascinating attraction, being a collection of ancient homes and cliff dwellings built by the Pueblo people. Until the mid-1800s, this collection of ancient homes was under threat of relic-hunters and careless ranchers seeking to clear land. The actions of several photographers, writers and other advocates led Colorado to designate the Mesa Verde ruins as a national park in 1906. Ever since, the area has drawn curious tourists, scientists and archeologists from all over the world to admire the dwellings and explore another world.

The city of Boulder is one of Colorado’s most adventure-friendly. Nearly 32,000 acres of recreational outdoor space and nature preserves surround the town, providing constant opportunity for tourists to hike, bike and rock-climb. Those seeking adventure can take trails that begin right at the edge of the city, or drive a short distance to pick up other trails. The trails accommodate all skill levels.

South of Boulder is the town of Eldorado Springs, which is the home of the Eldorado Canyon and world-renowned rock-climbing.
