About California
California became the 31st state of the Union in 1850, but native people have inhabited the state for thousands of years. California is one of the largest states in the U.S., and boasts the largest population. The Spanish colonized the California territories, and when Mexico gained its independence in 1821, California became a part of Mexico. For a week in 1846, California was its own independent country, called the California Republic. But following the Mexican-American War in 1848, California was annexed by the U.S. and made into a state two years later.
As far away as California was from the birthplace of the nation, and the hub of transportation and trade with Europe, the state might never have grown very large. But when the California Gold Rush hit in 1848, California received a flood of people from all over the continent and the world, and experienced an economic boom.
Though only a few people ‘struck it rich’ during the Gold Rush, and many more people lost everything they had, California managed to thrive. Many people, whether they were successful prospectors or not, stayed in the state when the rush was over, and this is in part why California has such dense population. San Francisco is one city that grew from a small collection of tents and shacks into a boomtown, precisely because of the Gold Rush.
Overlooking the San Francisco Bay, the city sits on the tip of the San Francisco peninsula. In 1906, a devastating earthquake shook most of the city to the ground and ignited fires that could not be put out for days. The city was devastated in a matter of days, with nearly 200,000 people homeless and several thousand dead. Luckily, the economic boom of the Gold Rush allowed the city to rebuild quickly, and by 1915, San Francisco had returned to its former glory. The experience left banks and financial institutions cautious and prepared, and when the Stock Market crashed in 1929, not one bank based out of San Francisco failed.
Los Angeles, the largest city in the state, had a Gold Rush of its own, although it might be more precise to call it a Silver Rush. Starting in the 1920s, with the Silver Screen gaining popularity all over the world, the motion picture industry began building its base in Los Angeles. L.A. was an ideal spot for movie studios, with its mostly sunny climate and lack of a snowy winter. Los Angeles is also known for its aviation industry. California’s capital is Sacramento, sometimes called The Big Tomato. The city actually has many nicknames, among them are: Capital City, River City, City of Trees, Sac, Sactown, Sack of Tomatoes, and Sacto. The city, like many in California, was born of the Gold Rush. Sacramento became California’s capital in 1855. Those interested in learning more about California, including how to become a notary public in the state, should visit Become A Notary Public.
