Alabama, the Heart of Dixie, became the 22nd state to join the Union in December of 1819. The state is named for one of the numerous Native American tribes that lived in the area.Alabama is now home to nearly 4.5 million people, 92% of which identify as Christian.The French were the first Europeans to permanently settle Alabama, and they did so by founding the city of Mobile. Mobile sits on the Gulf of Mexico, and today is home to a bustling seaport and many historically significant homes.The capital of Alabama is Montgomery, a city known as the Cradle of the Confederacy, since the group that formed the Confederate States of America met at this city’s capital building. Jefferson Davis was inaugurated President of the C.S.A. in Montgomery, and the city served as the Confederate capital for a while before they moved the seat to Richmond, Virginia. The city is still home to the first white-house of the Confederacy.Famous civil-rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a minister in Montgomery in the 1950s, and led many demonstrations in the 1950s and 60s for his cause. African American Civil Rights activists effectively organized a successful public transportation boycott, leading to the desegregation of the city’s public transportation. Today, visitors to Montgomery can see the Civil Rights Memorial by Maya Lin, and numerous museums and historical sites dedicated to preserving the moments of the movement, including the Rosa Parks Museum and Library.Birmingham was founded in 1871, and quickly became the largest city in Alabama, due for a large part to the expansion of its iron and steel industry. Known as the ‘Pittsburgh of the South,’ Birmingham has since widened its industry to include aircraft and car-part production, and chemical and textile manufacturing.Birmingham’s most interesting (and visible) feature is a cast-iron statue of Vulcan, Roman god of fire and the forge. The statue is the largest of its kind in the world, and resides in Vulcan Park, a ten-acre public space that overlooks the city.Alabama was home to the first NASA Space Flight Center. Its first director was Dr. Von Braun, a German scientist who moved to Alabama 1950, who led the space program for numerous years. Under him, some of the most powerful tools of space exploration, including the rocket used in the first successful flight to the moon, were developed and built at the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center at Huntsville. Today, those interested in space exploration can go to Huntsville to the Space Camp there.Famous blind-deaf author and teacher Helen Keller was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama.
